The main purpose of private companies is to make money for their owners. And when you buy shares of a certain company. Then you become a part owner of that company in order to profit from the company's growth and income.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the company management will succeed in making money for you. That's why you have to be careful about which business you choose to invest in and which company management you choose to trust.

In hopes of making a profit, or at least keeping up with inflation. Some of the more altruistic invest in "do good" companies because they like the work they do.

i think the main reason people used to invest in shares was to make more money more quickly than any other way.
now i think the reasons have shifted slightly to 'invest in companies which will survive the recession so my money is safer there than in the bank.'

I've been thinking about this type of investment to earn more money. I guess there's a lot of risk whatever business you enter.
